SEPTEMBER TENT
This month, The Emerald Tent enters the territory of initiation with the old fairy tale The Girl Without Hands. It is a strange and beautiful story of a young woman who loses the very things with which she reaches, holds, makes, and acts in the world—and must enter the wilderness without knowing how, or when, they will return. Like so many true initiations, hers cannot be hurried. She wanders, receives help, encounters love, loses what she thought she had found, and continues on until something new begins to grow.
As autumn arrives and many of us find ourselves living through changes we did not entirely choose, this story asks us to consider what happens in the long middle: after an old way of being has fallen away, but before we know who we are becoming.
